FYI Ezster you are correct to point out that the residency/living in Italy requirement will only apply in certain situations, and that is if you are claiming JS citizenship from an ancestor more than 3 generations removed. So, 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation applicants won't need to live in Italy to apply under the current proposal. As for the language requirement, I personally applaud that requirement. B1 is Intermediate level and can be achieved with about 200 or so hours of good intensive language training. I think anyone who immigrates to a country and wants citizenship should be literate in the language of their new country. (just my opinion and what my Italian mother had to do to pass her U.S. citizenship test in the '50's). But in any event, having been in the Peace Corps and required, within 10 weeks in the country (Ukraine in my case, a language much more difficult than Italian) to be at B1 or above level, I know it is doable. Again, my opinion, but it shows a commitment to fully integrating into the culture.

Wow! I can remember when USA citizenship requirement was denouncing your homeland. Sad that many who did that may never been entitled to regain that citizenship or even apply. Several European country have done same. Germany. Have yo be German blood, speak, read and write. It appears this is yo prevent any of the migrants access to citizenship. And to think many Italians migrated to South America and Mexico for 100s of years

I tried getting dual citizenship back in 2001, I had all the information they wanted all typed up neatly, Houston consulate was giving me a hard time, and they gave my father a hard time years later when he went to the consulate in Houston, somehow they just don't want to work, ove those experiences in Italy with the carabinieri, they didn't want to be bothered. This is very good information you're giving I'm relaying this information to my sister.

Thank you Alfred for the update on proposed changes to the Jus Sanguinis law. You and I had a call a while back about my applying in Sicily at my grandfather's Comune in Sciacca. Anyone serious about Italian citizenship should not balk at learning the language (just one man's opinion). For most of us working stiffs, however, the real dealbreaker is foregoing the ability to earn and support our families for 6-12 months while we wait in Italy for recognition. I am coming to realize that the consular route is probably hopeless (I have had all my docs for a year+ and have not been able to get past the "canned message" I get on the Houston Consulate website "Due to the elevated level of requests, there are no available appointments). As I am only 8.5 years away from retirement, I am adjusting to the reality that I can still apply to live in Italy on a "retirement visa" as would any non-Italian American citizen. Not really the same, but you can't always get what you want in life. Così è la vita

These two places feel more & more magical every time I visit! I’d almost be willing to live in a tent if I could wake up to that scenery every morning. I have tears in my eyes when I’m taking it all in. I was lucky enough to see the orchestra playing at the Teatro Antico ( not the actual concert - it was about 6.30pm and I think maybe they were practicing / warming up but it was fine for anyone to sit and enjoy). Sending best wishes to you both!😘

Good morning from East Texas! I contacted the Italian Citizenship Assistance (ICA) attorney agency there in Italy last week . Irene sent me the family chart to fill out and send back to them to determine if I'm eligible to apply for dual citizenship by blood, or discent. I also contacted the Archdiocese of The St Augustine Catholic Church in New Orleans, LA., weeks ago and they weren't accepting any applications at that time. They sent me an email on Wednesday to say they're now taking applications for your family genealogy search. ICA seems very reputable, have you heard of this Law Office? They have a RUclips channel and Raphael and Marco do a great job explaining all things Italian residency. If I must learn Italian so be it, i have time to learn and have often worried about living in Italy and not knowing how to communicate while being there. I find it very annoying here in Texas because so many Spanish speaking migrants coming here from Mexico and South America and now from everywhere, don't speak any English and it does annoy me! I can see the same thing about going to my ancestors homeland and not knowing Italian. I was planning on learning some Italian before heading over, but now I'll just enroll in college someplace and study online and get my certification. I have a small horse farm and my horses are old and i have a big house full of all my furniture and belongings. I need to decide what to do with my place here, keep it or sell it and take the giant leap of faith and just do it Ester and Al. I don't have any grandchildren, and all five of my children are grown married and living the crazy busy American way of life. They have no desire to live in the country or have farm animals. Why do i think they'd want to have or live on my place in the event of my death? They wouldn't! I think sometimes I should just sell and live out my life doing what I love, eating seafood pasta going to the beach and drinking fine wines and enjoying people that are happy healthy loving and fun! What do you think? Annette Fivehands
